STORM WATER MANAGEMENT IN THE CITY OF
The City of One item, which is still somewhat prevalent, is the mowing and blowing of grass into the streets. This grass washes into the storm sewer system, causing blockages (with resulting basement flooding) and results in excessive phosphorus and ammonia washing to the river. This practice of grass disposal is covered under the city’s codified ordinances and you may be cited. Your best bet is to leave the grass on your lawn and allow the phosphorus and ammonia to break down and re-enter your lawn, thereby fertilizing it for free. Another way you can help is not to dump anything down catch basins or in the street. These basins go to the Sandusky River or local creeks, and oil, antifreeze, used paint, kerosene, paint thinner and other items cause pollution and could contribute to a the killing of fish and other aquatic life. stormwater management, go to http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/stormwater/swfinal.cfm.
